From June 25 to July 25, 2013, I had the opportunity to participate in National Chengchi University’s International Research Program for Field Study in Taiwan and China. A former classmate of mine at Rutgers University, who now teaches at National Chengchi University (NCCU), informed me about this summer program. If it were not for him, I would not have found out about this. During the first four days of the program, Professor Chen, the director of the program, invited professors at NCCU and outside speakers to give lectures on the relationship between China and Taiwan and politics in Taiwan. Since my Chinese ability is limited, I could not understand everything during the lectures. Having said that, the staff at NCCU, as well as other participants in the program, did everything possible to accommodate me with the language gap. After the first four days, we had much free time to conduct research as we wished. I used that time to conduct a convenient sample survey on cross strait relations. Due to the political openness in Taiwan, government permission is not needed for conducting interviews or surveys. Throughout the four weeks, the staff, especially Yu‐Shan Lo, organized various outings in Taiwan. This was a much‐needed break at times from the research. In brief, this was a great experience. I would strongly recommend it for any graduate student or professor interested in conducting research on politics in Taiwan or cross‐strait relations. I would like to thank NCCU and its staff, especially Professor De‐Sheng Chen and Yu‐Shan Lo, for this excellent opportunity.
